Chick-fil-A’s Bold Step into 24/7 Vending
The culinary giant measured the public pulse correctly: when it comes to instant gratification, most people don't operate on a 9-to-5 timetable. Chick-fil-A's release of the 24-hour vending machine ticks a lot of boxes. Certainly, the vending machine is a long way from Chick-fil-A's signature counter service. However, this is tiktok kinetic-esque energy and a gadget that is available 24/7. Those who know Chick-fil-A’s service as a “chicken sandwich” meal fit for a pilgrimage to the temple of chicken sandwiches. This strikes you as a brash move. This is Chick-fil-A, this is not a local dive, but patty purveyors at the crossroads of fast, instant, and convenience. The machine is branded with the Chick-fil-A logo and colors so you won't lose your way.
The Tastebud Conundrum
The vending machine answers another conspicuous gap in Chick-fil-A’s menu infrastructure. Cold and hot drinks from a vending machine suits the mood of a late night drive for some. Chick-fil-A’s new venture doesn’t just offer chicken sandwiches, waffle fries, and drinks. It mainly displays a menu of Chick-fil-A items. They are beloved menu items, still. But waffle fries on a cold steel wall are not the same experience as an angry fries-order queue. Similar vending machines are not new frontiers. The vending machine offers a selection of popular Chick-fil-A menu items, but it's the menu that isn't the attraction. First impressions are important, of course, but this is a very small space.
The future of QSR? Probably not.
Chick-fil-A’s 24-hour vending machine is a notch towards convenience, but it's more than that. The presence of a singular red-lit box at a localized spot is so much different than the experience. But another box is just another box. It’s one thing for Chick-fil-A to be on a street corner — but vending machines are a different thing. It’s hard to imagine the idea of a number of these machines operating at once. A vending machine flips the entire consumer experience. Chick-fil-A is an endangered species at a time when brands like Popeyes and McDonalds are going to quality and authenticity. It may be that a vending machine is not a move in the right direction.
