Tech Industry has a Water Problem
The tech industry's hunger for data is no insider secret, but its thirst for water is a less-discussed issue. The trillions of queries processed every few months require vast server farms, which consume enormous amounts of energy, and significantly. They also consume water, lots of it. . Sure, ChatGPT queries streamline our work, but the water usage can mount quickly. One ChatGPT query uses approximately 3.56 liters of water, though one might think it's more expensive than that. . On the surface, this puts into perspective. Scientists estimate that each liter of water is worth $20 for drinking water, which is more expensive than electricity. Imagine the water bill chomp up $71 per query.
The Agricultural Water Footprint
To put the tech industry's water consumption into context, let's look at agriculture, where water scarcity issues are often discussed. In California, the water footprint of crops varies widely. Attrition rates are going out of control, thus the water cycle of water is not usable for humans. Data centers cannot live without the water cycle which is a contradiction to its footprint.
Alternative Options
So where can we go from here? Well, a relocation of data centers. Data centers are most of the time built in urban areas. Panels of solar energy can be used, and water can be reclaimed.
