Dollar Tree's exclusive Haribo flavors
The dollar store is keeping up with the trend of limited-edition candy. Bagged candy is no longer a surprise — Haribo has partnered with Dollar Tree to release five exclusive candy varieties. However, these singles are more than a wallet-friendly treat — each bagged flavor is a seasonal novelty. The flavors listed include Mango Flamingos, Pear Parakeets, and Strawberry Fairies. This exclusivity is further illustrated by the pre-release of Blue Raspberry-Bees and Dragon’s Fruit variety. Strangely, the latter is not introduced as a rarity, but instead as a staple of the new line.
The novelty of exclusive flavors in grocery
Single-flavored candies are not a new concept. But part of the novelty is in the ability to capitalize on seasonal tastes. Each flavor offered by Haribo is a unique fruit. The four being offered at Dollar Tree are figment of the imagination: Fla-Mangos, Pear-akeets, Straw-Fairies, and Raspberry-Bees. Mangoes and blue raspberries are also the most common flavors in this list of candies. Even the Dragon-Fruit Punch has imagery of a fruit punch with a dragon in the punch. The presentation does not show the packaging of the candies, but the imagery of the flyer makes it clear that these candies are meant to be an indulgent treat. Dollar Tree likely chose this niche market for the novelty of the candy and the trend of seasonal exclusivity. The candy is meant to be a treat, and the marketing of it as such is a significant portion of the appeal.
A candy trend for the holidays, not the festivals
As a budget retailer, Dollar Tree is still often overlooked as a source for trendy new products. This is part of what makes it such an appealing selection for the candy. The packaging and the flavors are steeped in boutique candy aesthetics. The name of the flavors is a boutique take on fruit names, and not an outlandish mix of common flavors. The marketing and branding is geared towards seasonal holidays and a deliberate standout. The candies are not for Halloween, but for fall. This is a deliberate attempt to market the candies as a seasonal treat, not a constant. The visually playful and marketing of the candies as a fruit punch fits into a larger trend of holiday exclusivity. All of the flavors are themed around fruit. And much like the marketing of the candy is themed around seasonal exclusivity, the candy packaging and flavors are a deliberate play on seasonal holiday exclusivity.
