A Retail Chain Disputing blue States
Buc-ee's isn't afraid to be confrontational with those who don't recognize their singular brand. They are not the only company to suggest such a differentiation: urban centers are often the places where liberal politics are most visible. Buc-ee's CEO Arch "Beaver" Aplin III has consistently espoused conservative beliefs and made no secret of his desire to see more conservative-leaning states appreciate the chain's largesse. As he said, "It's a shame when people don't appreciate what we do". "Why should we go to places that don't want us?" Their popularity may motivate Anecdotally, the chain has seen more success in politically conservative areas. The masculine aesthetic of the stores—think faux rustic wood and bear decor, and the specific signage on the stores as well as the overall image — reflects the values of conservative customers. The chain is already known for its strong ties to the conservative politics of Texas. A recent incident involving a store manager who refused to sell a Pride-themed shirt highlighted the chain's contentious relationship with conservative values.
A Mightier Mall
Conservative features within Buc-ee's include a legal ghost south of the border. They are not the only ones who recognize these characteristics. Their locations are vast "all the restrooms glow with LED lights". This repute doesn't translate to more urban areas. Political divisiveness has become entrenched in some of the more polarizing areas of the country, and liberal state voters feel diametrically opposed to the brand — its design, and its attitude. Tastebud is one such company that has come up against Buc-ee's. The category "taste" is one of Buc-ee's distinctives. The combination of a diverse food selection including fried twisted potatoes, beef jerky, and their famous donuts and a vast location of stores makes it distinct. One has to admit, the ground game is one where Buc-ee's is winning.
Sturdy Symbols
The Buc-ee's brand is like a statement of American values — a flag on steroids. Rugged individualism, anti-establishment populism, the love of the open road: see the quote above. Many find these symbols comforting. This is a more productive line of inquiry than asking why the average American finds themselves here: the question is not why Buc-ee's is here ; it is why anyone would want to put up with it. It is perhaps naive to expect a level of acceptance from both red and blue states. Buc-ee's is a conservative brand. It's like asking if they should be tolerant of a brand that is different, and to expect them to like a brand they already dislike. The blue state customers have little reason to embrace Buc-ee's. The question is: will Buc-ee's ever be comfortable in those states?
